Alumni
Our Health Science Scholars alumni have gone on to thrive in various health-related careers. Although many become physicians, others pursue diverse fields, including epidemiology, community health, and dual MD/PhD programs. Despite their different journeys, all alumni share a commitment to excellence in their professions and an appreciation for the experiences they gained through the program.
Santiago Sanchez
HSS Class of 2013
MD/PhD student at Stanford
Memorable experiences: Research at the National Cancer Institute, acting in a play, volunteering with Camp Kesem, and being on HSS Council
Advice: Don’t worry about being unique, worry about investing deeply into experiments that reflect what matters to you and communicating it to others. Advocate for yourself early and often.
Jarrett Rong
HSS Class of 2020
Medical student at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine
Memorable Experiences: HSS Campout
Advice: Take the time to enjoy the four years in college. It's not worth it to stress too much.
Grace Schaack
HSS Class of 2015
Research-track pathology resident at UT Southwestern
Memorable experiences: The HSS community was and continues to be a fantastic source of friendship, mentorship, and support for me! Early opportunities to participate in research and mentoring via FRI were also important in my journey to becoming a physician-scientist.
Advice: Enjoy the journey! Soak up university life -- there is a wealth of knowledge, experience, history, and art all around you. Explore and indulge in hobbies and academic interests that might not be immediately relevant to medicine -- take advantage of the ease with which you can try out new activities and elective courses during your undergraduate years.
